33 South Backpackers

33º South Backpacers is situated smack bam in the middle of the suburb of Observatory in Cape Town. Observatory got its name from being artthe location of the first Royal Star Observatory by the British in 1820. Throughout apartheid years Observatory was always known as a very liberal 'grey' area with a mix of all colors and races as its inhabitants.

Today it is very popular with students and seems to attract a very creative bunch of individuals. You will find arts, music and culture to be the key idol in this area. It is laced with coffee shops, bars, rustic little restaurants and many art and antique stores.

33º South used to be an old student house in Obs (as locals refer to it) and got transformed in 2007 into a boutique backpackers, by founders Kim Whitaker and Cindy Taylor.

It is conveniently located within close 33 Southwalking distance to all the entertainment and nightlife Obs has to offer. The backpackers mirrors the artistic approach of so many things in Observatory and therefore also seems to attract those with artistic incline.

Tuesday nights are creative evenings at 33º South when all the local talent come and show off their skill.33 South It is open mike and all about sharing, so here you'll find everything from street poetry, drumming, craft, cooking and much more to make it an unforgettable evening.

33º South is very involved with the local community, supporting an all girls soccer development team and also serving as a homebase for the local neighbourhood watchmen.

Observatory itself has a great nightlife. A quaint theatre duped "The Armchair thaetre" with performances most nights and great cuisine is definately worth a visit. Once a month the little suburb hosts "The Holistic Fare" with all kinds of new age stuff, like the name implies.

Accommodation


Because Cape Town is so diverse in its areas and people, the owners came up with a concept to theme and decorate each room according to a different areaDorm beds and 'culture' of Cape Town. 33º South is a medium sized backpackers with four dorms and two double rooms.

The focus is on clean space, so each bed is made with a nice white fluffy duvet and comfy pillows.

Every room offers good security with locks, lockable cupboards and a security safe in each cupboard to store valuables in.

Meals


Every morning a variety of beautifully laid out muffins are muffinsserved with breakfast, which is included in the price. Lunches are not served, since there are so many great places close by to get meals from.

Dinners range from Braais in the summer to a mix of African cuisine in the winter.

For those that want to prepare their own lunches there is a kitchen available and a supermarket with an ATM around the corner to get supplies from.

Directions Getting There

N2 From Cape Town towards Airport


Get onto the N2 going towards Cape Town Airport. Stay in the left lane. Take the first off ramp, Liesbeeck Parkway to the left and follow until you get to the first set of traffic lights. Turn left here into Station rd, go over the railway bridge, then take the first road after the bridge to your left called Herschel rd. Take the first road to your right, Trill rd. You will see 33ºSouth backpackers on your left. (48 Trill rd).

N2 From Airport to Cape Town City Centre


Take the N2 heading towards Cape Town. when getting closer to the city after crossing a water channel get into the left lane. Take the Liesbeeck off-ramp. Turn right at the bottom and follow until you get to the first set of traffic lights. Turn left here into Station rd, go over the railway bridge, then take the first road after the bridge to your left called Herschel rd. Take the first road to your right, Trill rd. You will see 33ºSouth backpackers on your left. (48 Trill rd).

Baz Bus


The Baz Bus picks up and drops off passengers at the door every day.
