33 South Backpackers
33º South Backpacers is situated smack bam in the middle of the suburb of Observatory in Cape Town. Observatory got its name from being
the location of the first Royal Star Observatory by the British in 1820. Throughout apartheid years Observatory was always known as a very liberal 'grey' area with a mix of all colors and races as its inhabitants.
Today it is very popular with students and seems to attract a very creative bunch of individuals. You will find arts, music and culture to be the key idol in this area. It is laced with coffee shops, bars, rustic little restaurants and many art and antique stores.
33º South used to be an old student house in Obs (as locals refer to it) and got transformed in 2007 into a boutique backpackers, by founders Kim Whitaker and Cindy Taylor.
It is conveniently located within close
walking distance to all the entertainment and nightlife Obs has to offer. The backpackers mirrors the artistic approach of so many things in Observatory and therefore also seems to attract those with artistic incline.
Lebo's Soweto Backpackers
Hello from Lebo's !
Overview
Whilst being a craft seller at the Hector Pieterson memorial in the township of Soweto and interacting with tourists on a daily base, Lebo went on his first backpacking excursion with fellow craft sellers to the Drakensberg, and got first hand knowledge as to what a Backpackers really is.
Lebo started hosting the random guest in 1999 at his grandmothers house in Orlando West, as there was nowhere for travellers to stay in Soweto. Realising the need for a backpackers in Soweto, Lebo founded "Lebo's Soweto Backpackers", the first black owned backpackers in South Africa in August 2003.
Starling Backpackers Village
About 2 kilometres from the Robberg Peninsula in Plettenberg Bay, you'll find Starling Backpackers on a country smallholding just off the Plettenberg Bay Airport Road.
Starling is owned and run in part ownership by Matt and Vikki Rowe.
Matt and Vikki started the backpackers in 2005 from scratch, building it up out of recycled material during the day, whilst waitering at night in Plettenberg Bay's restaurants to earn money. Vikki runs a community project that knits beach bags, hammocks, pillows and shower curtains out of recycled plastic bags. This is soon to become a full fledged community project to support disadvantaged community members.
Their personaliies are well reflected in everything in the backpackers. The backpackers has a type of 'retro' country feel to it with words like bar, barn, saloon and homestead all coming together as one word, something like "barnstead" perhaps, with horses and dogs adding to the flavour of Starling Village.
The backpackers has a lively bar, complete with a dancing pole, pool table, fussball, lots of board games and table tennis. There are good mountainbiking trails in the Harkerville forest nearby, a beautiful hike around the Robberg Peninsula, good surfing, an airfield across the road for skydiving and many adventure activities and wild animal sanctuaries nearby.
Wild Spirit Backpackers Lodge
A quick overview
When trying to describe this lodge, words like wizards, fairies and gnomes come to mind. The lodge itself is situated on a farm in the Crags (close to Nature's Valley), between the Tsitsikamma and Outeniqua Mountains on the Garden Route. The Crags is famous for its many sanctuaries and boasts an snake, elephant, bird, wild african cat and primate sanctuary.
It borders the Tsitsikamma forest, with many hiking trails, like the Saltriver circular trail and nature walks. It doesn't look as though this place was built, but rather grown and woven into the forest with driftwood sculpturing and wooden cottages.
Here, you will find all kinds of magical creatures, like the three dogs who act as tour guides, if you go for a walk in the forests and a crazy horse called Jerepigo, (complete wth his own facebook profile) who looks like he can talk, if only you ask him the right question.
